A carpet is a lovely addition to any room in the house. A quality rug can add style, warmth, and a homey feeling. At winter it keeps you from walking on the cold floor and it will also keep your neighbors happy and reduce noise inside the house.
Did we say enough? Are you running to the store to get a rug? Well wait! Because buying a rug is pretty complicated and there plenty of things you want to check, measure and know when buying a rug. The rug is one of the most important and noticeable things that we place in our living room – that is the reason why you should be twice as careful when buying a rug.
1. Size. It’s the basic thing with all furniture, appliances and decoration. Be sure to know which room the rug is intended to be and what is the size of that room. When you measure, pay close attention to your furniture and overall design. Consider a reasonable size of a carpet that will not be too small to notice or too big so it will swallow the rest of the room.
2. Many stores keep rugs hanging from the ceiling which can be confusing. Never decide on buying a rug just by seeing it hanging. Don’t be lazy and ask from the salesman to put the rug on the floor. You will be surprised to see how small it looks when you are standing above it.
3. One of the biggest mistakes that people tend to make when they buy a rug is not checking it. And we don’t mean the quality of it, but how it feels under your feet. Again, don’t be shy, take off your shoes, your socks and walk on the carpet. That is what it is for and that’s the way you will be using it in the next few years. Not walking on a carpet is like buying a TV without looking at the picture.
4. Remember that dark carpets make rooms look much smaller than they are in reality. Bright colors make rooms look a lot bigger. So color is very important here. If you have a smaller apartment, you might want to consider going for bright colors.
5. Now once and for all – how do you tell the difference between a hand and machine made carpet? The easiest way to find out is by looking at the texture and pattern. A handmade carpet will never be symmetrical, both in the shape and in pattern. A handmade carpet will also have color and shade differences in the design and when you will look at the back of the carpet you will notice that knots are not symmetrical as well.
